Medium bio

~170 words

Lois Lavrisa has never believed a life should fit neatly into one genre. An award-winning, Amazon bestselling novelist and nonfiction writer, she is the author of Liquid Lies and the four-book Georgia Coast Cozy Mystery Series, set against the beautiful—and sometimes deadly—backdrop of coastal Georgia. Her fiction blends mystery, humor, memorable characters, and the secrets people keep.

But not every story Lois wants to tell is invented. She is also writing Running Between Raindrops, a memoir in progress about growing up amid family dysfunction and addiction, the search for belonging, and the courage it takes to find your own voice.

Originally from Chicago’s South Side and now based in Savannah, Lois brings a wonderfully varied résumé to the page: journalist, college instructor, corporate trainer, and former professional NBA Chicago Bulls cheerleader. Across fiction and nonfiction, her curiosity is the same: What makes people who they are, and what happens when the truth finally comes to light?

Long bio

Full biography

A mystery novelist. A memoirist. A journalist. A college instructor. A corporate trainer. And, once upon a time, a professional NBA Chicago Bulls cheerleader. Lois Lavrisa has lived more than one kind of story—and she’s not finished telling them.

An award-winning, Amazon bestselling author based in Savannah, Georgia, Lois writes fiction that blends suspense, humor, heart, and the deliciously inconvenient secrets people keep. Her published novels include the standalone mystery Liquid Lies and the four-book Georgia Coast Cozy Mystery Series: Dying for Dinner Rolls, Murderous Muffins, Homicide by Hamlet, and Killing with Kings. Along the coast, Southern charm is plentiful, but a peaceful afternoon is never guaranteed.

Her storytelling reaches beyond mystery fiction. Lois is working on Running Between Raindrops, a nonfiction memoir about childhood in a family shaped by addiction and dysfunction, the invisible rules of silence and shame, and the long, imperfect journey toward identity and belonging. Written with a novelist’s eye for scene and a memoirist’s commitment to emotional truth, the book explores how a child makes sense of the things adults refuse to name. It is a work in progress, not yet a published title.

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Lois studied journalism and communications before building a career writing for newspapers, teaching at the college level, and training corporate audiences. Those years taught her to listen for what’s missing, to notice contradiction, and to ask the next question. The same instincts now shape both her mysteries and her personal writing.

And yes, she really did cheer professionally for the Chicago Bulls. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to live—or write—in one genre.

Lois enjoys meeting readers, speaking with community groups, and discussing creativity, writing, reinvention, resilience, and the stories we inherit. Whether the subject is a fictional murder or a family’s unspoken history, she is drawn to complicated people, unexpected turns, and the truth at the heart of a good story.

Nonfiction

Nonfiction & Memoir

Not every secret belongs in a mystery novel.

Memoir in progress

Running Between Raindrops

A memoir about silence, survival, and finding a voice.

Lois also writes nonfiction drawn from lived experience—stories about identity, family, resilience, and the complicated ways we make sense of our past.

Growing up in a family shaped by addiction and dysfunction, a young girl learns to read the room, follow invisible rules, and carry stories no one is supposed to tell. Years later, she returns to those memories with candor, compassion, and flashes of humor, asking how we become ourselves when the people who raised us have their own storms.

The manuscript is in development. Publication details, excerpts, and cover artwork will be announced when available. For interviews about the writing of memoir, family narratives, and the craft of nonfiction, contact SunLake Press.

Ready-made Q&A

Interview Guide

Questions and sample answers to help hosts and journalists prepare.

✎ These are sample talking points in Lois’s conversational style—not previously recorded or verbatim interview quotations. Lois may use or adapt them in interviews.
01How did you go from cheering for the Chicago Bulls to writing murder mysteries?
It’s not exactly a straight line, is it? I’ve always had a lot of interests. Journalism taught me to ask questions, teaching and training taught me to connect with people, and the Bulls? Well, that was a pretty unforgettable and not at all a straightforward chain of events. All of it gave me stories to tell.
02What makes coastal Georgia a good setting for a mystery?
Savannah is practically a character all by itself. It’s beautiful, full of history, and has some wonderfully colorful personalities. I love putting a mystery into a place that looks so inviting. Everything can seem perfectly charming—until it isn’t.
03What first drew you to mystery fiction?
I love a story that makes me think I’ve figured it out, and then proves me wrong. And I’m fascinated by why people do what they do. Give me secrets, quirky characters, and a few good twists, and I’m happy.
04Where do your characters come from?
Bits and pieces of people, conversations, memories, and pure imagination. I might hear one funny remark and suddenly an entirely new character starts taking shape. Then, of course, the character usually refuses to behave.
05What is the biggest surprise about writing a novel?
How much rewriting there is! The first draft is a beginning, not the finish line. You can love your story and still have to wrestle with it to get it where you want it.
06Do your novels need to be read in order?
You can jump into any of the Georgia Coast books because each has its own mystery. But if you like watching familiar characters pop up and develop, start with Dying for Dinner Rolls and keep going.
07What did journalism teach you about storytelling?
To listen, really listen. Ask another question. Pay attention to the details that seem small. Sometimes the most interesting part of a story is what nobody wants to say out loud.
08What would you tell someone who wants to write a book?
Start. Really. Don’t wait until you have a perfect idea, perfect schedule, or perfect first sentence. Get something on the page. You can make it better later, but first you need something to work with.
09You write mysteries and memoir. What connects those two forms?
More than you might think. Mysteries explore what’s hidden and what happens when the truth comes out. Memoir does, too. The huge difference is that in memoir I don’t get to invent what happened. I have to be faithful to my experience.
10What made you decide to write Running Between Raindrops?
There were stories from my childhood that stayed with me for decades. I wanted to explore them through the eyes of the little girl who lived them—not just what happened, but how it felt. And there has to be room for humor and humanity, too. Real families are complicated.
11How do you write about family with compassion without softening the truth?
I don’t want villains on every page. I want people. That doesn’t mean excusing painful things. It means trying to tell the truth as I remember it, while recognizing that people are more complicated than their worst moments.
